Description:
The black or white mulberry tree comes from the Near East and was settled in the Mediterranean region. in particular to provide food for the silkworms. The valuable ingredients are in the leaves, which were formerly used as food for the valuable silkworms. In particular, the high proportion and variety of different amino acids make the leaves, in addition to the relatively high proportion of iron and calcium, a valuable “superfood”. In the Balkans, the consumption of mulberry leaves has long been recommended in traditional medicine in order to lower high blood sugar levels and to change the metabolism in the long term. According to current study algae, this effect is based on the naturally high iminosugar content.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the leaves of the white mulberry tree are particularly recommended and its roots are considered draining, laxative, antipyretic, suppresses coughing and lowers blood glucose levels. The leaves of the mulberry tree support the functional circuits of the heart, liver and kidneys.
When should I consult an expert?
The opinion of a veterinarian, equine naturopath or equine expert is important in the following cases:
• your horse has or has recently had a serious illness (such as colic, laminitis or fever)
• your horse’s metabolism is not working well
• your horse is (very) overweight
• somehow your horse is “different” than usual, unmotivated or sensitive to touch
• The hormone system has changed or is noticeably different from that of other horses
• your horse tends to walk sensitively
• your horse suffers from allergic reactions such as itching, coughing or hives
• your mare is pregnant or has a foal at her heels
• your horse is one of the “oldies” or is heading towards it
With 15 – 25%, the mulberry leaves contain a higher protein content than any other plant.
They are particularly rich in vital substances:
Calcium 2700 mg
iron 44 mg
Sodium 3.4 mg
Potassium 3100 mg
Carotene 7.4 mg
Vitamin A 4200 IU
Vitamin B1 0.6 mg
Vitamin B2 1.4 mg
Vitamin B3 4.0 mg
Vitamin C 32 mg
fibers 53 g
not water soluble 45 g
water soluble 7 g
The content of amino acids, saccharides and secondary plant substances is also very high. The mulberry leaves have a total of 17 different amino acids.
Probably the most important ingredient in mulberry leaves is the alkaloid 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ). The alkaloid has a proven effect on diabetes mellitus and is not found in this form in any other plant. As a phytochemical, DNJ has a multiple effect against diabetes meUse and effect of mulberry leaf llitus type 2 (adult-onset diabetes):
By blocking an enzyme in the small intestine, DNJ ensures that the sugar is no longer broken down and thus gets into the blood. The absorption rate decreases and the blood sugar level no longer shoots up after eating. The formation of glucose molecules that attach to hemoglobin is inhibited by the DNJ and less glucose is transported into the bloodstream. Due to its properties, the DNJ ensures that the broken insulin-forming Langerhans’ islet cells in the pancreas are restored and thus natural insulin is formed again. This increases blood sugar utilisation again. There is also a lot of glutamic acid in mulberry leaves. The glutamic acid is converted into gamma amino butyric acid (GABA). GABA, in turn, ensures that the increased level of glucagon is regulated and thus the blood sugar level also drops. Mulberry leaves are well suited as a natural remedy for diabetes due to the ingredients DNJ and GABA. They also lower cholesterol levels because they lower the absorption rate of cholesterol and triglycerides and increase good HDL cholesterol.
